Abstract

We conducted the spatial autocorrelation analysis of 12 quantitative characters among 11 Korean populations of Hemerocallis thunbergii Baker to understand their geographic variation patterns and then to provide sampling strategies of plants fear the evaluation of their horticultural usefulness: There were in general two types of relationships between the mean values of the characters and their spatial autocorrelations. Most vegetative characters as well as length of inner perianth showed a short distance negative autoeorrelation and a crazy quilt pattern, suggesting a considerable phenotypic plasticity of these characters. On the outer hand, most floral characters showed depression and cline. Among 12 characters, only width of outer perianth showed a typical monotoinc decline from significant positive autocorrelation at distance of 105 §° to a significant negative autocorrelation at distance of 145 §°. The observed patterns of floral characters might have resulted from the combinations of gene flow, genetic drift, and/or selective forces operated in the populations of N. thunbergii.
